As noted in the Forbes article from Aprils 2018 “NFL Players Need A Playbook,” it is critical for athletes that come into sudden wealth to have both a playbook and financial team to help advance and protect their wealth. “Player’s salaries are cut by about 50% after taxes and agent fees. Long story short, an athletes life after their playing career lasts much longer so using the money you can make during those years to prepare yourself for your future is paramount to a life of stability and security.”
How may we help you reach your goals?

“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.” – Vince Lombardi
While organizations including the NFL conducts workshops for players covering topics such as substance abuse, gambling and personal finance, their effectiveness is a matter for debate. Many pro athletes may assume the money will keep flowing in for years, but that’s usually not the case.
The need for financial advice is indisputable, as the average career of a professional athlete is typically anywhere from only 3-5 years. The challenge is making the earnings of a relatively short career last a lifetime.
In “Going for broke: When athletes lose it all,” (CBS 9/13/2015) it is noted that athletes should take some sort of “financial boot camp” beyond courses offered in college. According to league statistics, the average career in the NFL is a little more than 3 years; Major League Baseball, about 5. The NBA is right in the middle. But planning for that kind of early, early retirement isn’t on most rookies’ minds when they hit the lottery.
Of the approximate 2,000 college football players drafted during the 8 years 1996-2003 who went on to play in the NFL, 1 out of 6 athletes (i.e., 15.7%) filed for personal bankruptcy within 12 years of retiring from the league (source: National Bureau of Economic Research).
Even more disturbing, is that athletes often delegate too much and oversee too little. Some entrust others not just to make the big financial moves but to pay routine bills. As noted in Wikipedia, “Only one out of every three professional athletes is focused on the business side of his or her career”.
There are some pro-athletes that got Money Smart before and after retirement as noted in 8 Ex- NFL Starts Made a Fortune. Bucking the perceived trend, these former football stars hang onto — and even grow — their nest egg.
Developing disciplined financial habits are not skills taught in college. The 7th tip in 10 Secret Mindsets of Multi-Millionaires points out to “Produce Relentlessly.”
A famous NBA player confided that he cannot go a day without shooting 1,000 shots every day. Financial success takes the same amount of grit and focus. Attaching yourself to your purpose is the secret to becoming a success both on and off the court.
